Things Not to Do with Your Lawyer Part 2 - Substitute Documents/ Give only Some of The Documents

When your lawyer asks you for documents, they are asking you for specific documents, usually from a particular time period.

Give them what they want.

When your attorney asks for a specific document, they want THAT specific document for a reason. Save yourself the headache of giving some other document that you feel is " just as good, " only to have to finally give the original document that they originally requested.

I have heard clients say that they are paying their lawyer " Just to do paperwork!"

Well, "yes and no." Documentation is part of the American system. When you own a house, you get a document called a deed, to show ownership. It's not just " Paperwork." That paperwork is worth hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. For Lawyers, and the legal system, there isn't "just paperwork."

If there is to be a division of assets in a divorce, we need to look at your financial documentation in order to defend or affirm a position in your case. Get us what we ask for, and ALL that we ask for. If you want this to go as smoothly as possible, your best bet is to follow instructions. Most of the time, we have sent you an email letting you know exactly the documents that we need.
